BOTOX® Cosmetic vs. Dermal Fillers
Nonsurgical facial rejuvenation procedures have risen in popularity over the past several years and BOTOX® Cosmetic, along with facial fillers like Juvederm® and Sculptra® are at the top of that list. Noninvasive and typically fast to produce results, these methods of facial rejuvenation have even begun to grow in popularity among younger men and women who, perhaps not yet ready for facial plastic surgery, have nonetheless become unhappy with the way aging impacted their appearance.
At Altos Oaks Plastic Surgery, we offer both BOTOX® Cosmetic and dermal fillers, enabling our plastic surgeons to meet a variety of concerns and needs. Determining which option will be right for your particular concerns can easily be accomplished during a one-on-one consultation at our Los Altos office. About BOTOX® Cosmetic
BOTOX® Cosmetic is a neurotoxin, which is not nearly as frightening as it sounds. The active ingredient in this product is botulinum toxin type A, which works to block the signals between nerves and specific muscles, resulting in a relaxation of both skin and underlying structure. BOTOX® neither damages the nerves nor causes paralysis, instead it produces a smooth appearance by allowing underlying tension to be released. The effect is temporary – typically lasting three to four months – making it ideal for special occasions, like weddings, where looking your best is important.
Of course, BOTOX® Cosmetic needn’t be reserved for special occasions. Many people choose to maintain their results through regularly scheduled treatments for issues including:
- Forehead Creases
- Frown Lines (in between the eyebrows)
- Crow’s Feet (next to the eyes)
BOTOX® Cosmetic can also be used for fine lines and deep wrinkles around the lips, on the chin, and on the neck.
Dermal Fillers
Dermal fillers, alternately known as facial fillers or simply fillers, come with a variety of active ingredients including hyaluronic acid (HA), calcium hydroxylapatite, and poly-L-lactic acid. Fillers work to restore lost volume by replenishing naturally occurring skin plumping molecules like HA that diminish in our bodies over time. Most fillers also stimulate collagen production, further enhancing the skin’s natural support structures to address issues including:
- Deep facial wrinkles
- Hollow cheeks
- Smile and laugh lines
- Pre-jowl folds
Some fillers can also be used to augment the lips, enhance the chin, and address minor imperfections on the nose. Restylane®, a filler offered at Altos Oaks, is also approved for the treatment of aged skin on the hands.
Dermal fillers can produce results for periods of 12 to 24 months depending on the type used, the area treated, and individual factors such as lifestyle and genetics. As with BOTOX®, some people choose to have treatments performed at regular intervals to ensure consistently smooth results.
